SUGAR: THE BAD
The Truth About Sugar
In 2009, The University of California uploaded an hour and a half YouTube video presentation by Dr Robert Lustig entitled:
‘Sugar: The Bitter Truth.’
The video went viral attracting over 8 million views!!
Around that time, a previously unknown ‘Gary Taubes’ wrote best-seller ‘Good Calories, Bad Calories,’ and ‘Why We Get Fat.’
These books were basically demonising carbohydratesand, especially, sugar.
The Low-Carb Craze
The Low-Carb craze was originally popularised in1972 when ‘Dr Atkin’s Diet Revolution’ came out.It was re-written in 2002 as ‘Dr. Atkin’s New Diet Revolution.’ The book remained a best-seller for 285 weeks!!!
In more recent years, the ‘Atkin’s Diet’ has been re-branded as ‘The Ketogenic Diet.’
…THE POINT OF ALL THIS IS…
that the consumption of carbohydrates (and especially SUGAR AND SWEETS) has been extensively demonised over the last 20 years for a number of reasons.
.....SO, THIS BLOG POSES THE QUESTION.....
IS SUGAR REALLY BAD FOR YOU?
TOO MUCH SUGAR IS BAD FOR YOU, BUT WHY???!!!!
“When God invented the poison, He surrounded it with the antitode”
Dr Robert Lustig
Sugar in its raw form was never meant to be consumed in large amounts, and has proven for many years to be a reliable energy source. The amount of sugar in sugar-cane, for instance, is relatively little. On top of that, it has to be sucked out (not an easy feat by the way).
However, when it’s processed, refined, and concentrated to give rise to conventional white table sugar (which has no nutrient or fibrous content whatsoever), then we really should minimise how much we consume.
SUGAR: THE UGLY
BUT, WHAT ARE THE COMMON PROBLEMS THAT COME
WITH EATING TOO MUCH REFINED SUGAR?
SUGAR: THE GOOD???
….WELL, NOT NECESSARILY…
Processed ‘Table’ Sugar (or ‘added’ sugar) is devoid of nutrients. It only serves to provide you with a short-term energy boost.
Unfortunately, because we consume too much of it, a lot of this energy is inevitably stored as fat. This is, of course, assuming that you’re on a calorie-deficit (as our friend ‘Professor Mark Haub’ famously demonstrated in 2010 (2)).
….SO, WHEN DOES SUGAR BENEFIT US THE MOST?…
Quite simply, when you need a quick energy boost, a sugar-rich snack or candy
bar is just what’s needed.
For instance, if you’re on a diet and exercise on a regular basis, it’s not uncommon to feel a little lethargic prior to a gym-session.
Munching on a cookie 20 minutes or so before an intense interval training programme does wonders in these circumstances .
The same can be said for diabetics with dangerously low blood sugar levels.
….SUGAR IS ALSO A GREAT PRESERVATIVE…
A bit like with salt, sugar (or sucrose) is often (and always has been) used as a
preservative to prevent microbial spoilage. Sugar has been used extensively for preserving fruits such as apples, pears, etc.
