However, there are some downsides to eating fish, and that’s largely due to their rich content of mercury, lead, and other heavy metals that unfortunately find their way into lakes, oceans, river, etc.
THERE’S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT MERCURY
What's The Story About Mercury??
Our main concern is the amount of mercury that’s found in a lot of fish!!
Large amounts of mercury may adversely affect the brain and nervous system, and can take up to 18 months to leave the body.
The risks of developing neurological (nerve) damage is higher in children and babies (pregnant mothers) because their brain and nerves are still developing.
What About The FDA?
This is why the Food and Drug Administration have
set up the following guidelines:
1. Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.
2. Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.
3. Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas.
